Tim Spalding is a knee surgeon in the Midlands at Warwickshire Nuffield Hospital and in London at the Cleveland Clinic London. He is past president of the International ACL Study Group dedicated to research in the field of ACL surgery. His focus is on ligament reconstruction and knee preservation covering meniscal repair and meniscal transplantation, articular cartilage repair, osteotomy, and novel Ortho-Biologics.
He spent the first part of his career with the Royal Navy, becoming consultant in 1995. Specialist training was in Oxford with subsequent fellowship in Toronto. He joined University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust in 2000, where he set up meniscal transplantation and lead a well-respected fellowship program before leaving in 2021. Research work continues with the Coventry knee team.
He has pioneered several new techniques and currently has over 100 publications and 12 book chapters. He leads the UK National Ligament Registry for ACL surgery, which is currently transitioning into the Non Arthroplasty Medical Devices Outcome Registry. Internationally, he co-leads the European Allograft Initiative, the International Meniscal REconstruction Forum (IMREF) and the ICRS Cartilage Foundation. He is co-moderator of the hugely successful UK Sports Knee Surgery biannual conference since 2003.
