Patrick Allen Smith, MD

Patrick A. Smith did his medical training at the University of Michigan, followed by a sports medicine fellowship under Dr. Jack C. Hughston. He joined the Columbia Orthopaedic Group in 1986 specializing in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He served as Head Team Physician at the University of Missouri for 30 years. Dr. Smith was also Co-Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Missouri where he served as an Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Most recently he relocated to Naples, Florida where he is the Director of Research and Education, as well as President of the Ambulatory Surgery Center for the Hospital for Special Surgery at Naples Comprehensive Health. Dr. Smith has been extensively involved in orthopaedic research with numerous peer reviewed publications. He performed the first FDA sanctioned study on the use of platelet rich plasma to treat knee osteoarthritis. He also has been a pioneer in the use of internal bracing for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair and reconstruction. Dr. Smith has been inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
